Retirement & Wealth Transfers
Losing a loved one is hard enough. The last thing you need is stress about how to access your inheritance when you’re living overseas. Yet many South Africans abroad quickly discover that transferring an inheritance isn’t as straightforward as it should be.
That’s where Currency Assist can help.
Why inheritance transfers can get tricky
Your tax residency status determines how inheritance money is transferred abroad:
- If you’re still considered a South African resident (temporarily abroad):
- You can transfer up to R1 million per year under your Single Discretionary Allowance (no tax clearance needed).
- For larger amounts, you can transfer up to R10 million per year under the Foreign Capital Allowance, but this requires an Application for International Transfer (AIT) from SARS.
- If you’re a SARS-recognized tax non-resident:
- Your inheritance (up to R10 million) can be transferred directly to your overseas account.
- No allowances need to be used.
Even if you’ve lost your South African ID or passport, the good news is we can still help you access your inheritance safely.
